How to Decorate Potted Herbs with Brown Paper Bags

DIY centerpieces with just herbs & a brown bag

Your lunchbag just got a major upgrade

Sounds funny right? But once you see the result, there is nothing but *insert chef’s kiss* about it. If you’re looking for ways to create easy DIY centerpieces, prettify your basil, or proudly display your homegrown herbs, this is the trick for you.

What you need:

  • Potted herbs
  • Brown paper bag

FYI: This DIY is ideal for summer farm-to-table styles, especially as most herbs are fresh in summer. However, if you’re looking for winter options, think of using rosemary for a mini-tree effect.

Now let’s get to it.

How-to:

  1.  Pick out your herbs.

Go to Home Depot, Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Lowe’s, Walmart Garden Center, or even outside your local grocery store and grab a few herbs in 3-4 inch pots. We like these herbs best for styling purposes:

  • Rosemary
  • Lavender
  • Thyme
  • Mint
  • Basil
  1. Crinkle your brown paper bag to perfection. You’ll be sliding the pot into the bag, so the crinkling you do now gives the textured effect. Less crinkling gives a crisper appearance, and a bit more crinkle adds an aged look.
  2. Trim the top so sizing is right for the pot’s height.
  3. Slide the bag up from the bottom of the pot, like putting on a sock.
If you’re concerned about water dripping through the pot, slip a plastic bag around the pot first. Cuff the top, and then follow with the brown paper bag.
  4. Display! These look great in your garden, on a kitchen table, or in a windowsill - and you can always pick the fresh herbs to use in your next batch of cocktails or dinner party!

Crinkled paper bags… did you ever think when you ate lunch out of these in high school the purpose they would serve years later? What will be next…
